When looking at antique lamps remember to not clean them up so much. This is especially true with the brass and sterling lamps. Cleaning them too much devaluates them considerably. On the popular series Antiques Road Show I am always amazed at the person with the 100 year old piece of brass that would have sold for $5,000 but one can of Brass-o later is worth about a buck fifty.
First, one must consider the room that the lamp is going to be put in. Decide whether it is the bedroom, the living room or any other room in the house. Also, one must clearly understand the function of the room that the lamp is going to be placed in. The colors of the room also matter a lot in choosing the right style. With checking all these factors one has to see that the following steps are followed. The first thing is that you must know where to position the lamp in the house. Certain positions in the house require different lamp styles.
When buying a modern floor lamp you must consider what you intend to use it for. A modern lamp meant for reading must be bright, while a lamp just for decoration does not necessarily have to light the room well. The two major factors when picking a functional modern lamp are size and lamp brightness. You will want a lamp that fits nicely into your home while still being tall enough and bright enough to light up your home. Too tall of a lamp can cause your room to look lopsided and if you have very low ceilings than your modern floor lamp just might not fit.
