The most common variety which has halogen bulbs cannot be right for everyone. These bulbs can be very bright and tire the eyes. These are definitely not recommended for the children. They cannot study for long hours without the eyes getting droopy and tired. Some times the glimmer and flicker of long use of the halogen lamp can be another strenuous factor to the eyes. This kind of light is very focused only on the text that is being read. The other areas of the desk remain dark, unless the other light is on in the room. When one is looking for desk lamps, the main issue is the bulb and the light it throws on the study material and work at hand. The design and features come second. The utility stands over the décor part.
Having the table lamps allow you to have more flexibility as they can be moved around your home and are not fixed like other lighting options. You can simply pick up the decorative table lamps and move them to another area when needed. You can use them for lighting a specific area or move them around when you want added lighting elsewhere. The brightness of the bulb in the table lamps will determine how much light you will have. You can feature the decorative table lamps in your decor and you will be surprised how great they look.
When looking at antique lamps remember to not clean them up so much. This is especially true with the brass and sterling lamps. Cleaning them too much devaluates them considerably. On the popular series Antiques Road Show I am always amazed at the person with the 100 year old piece of brass that would have sold for $5,000 but one can of Brass-o later is worth about a buck fifty.
